IHS Symbol

The Letters IHS interwoven with each other to form what appears to be a dollar sign are often found on many headstones.

There are two thoughts of the meaning for this symbol.

The first is that it means 'Independent Sons of Honor'

The second and probably the most likely -  IHS looks like dollar sign if letters are superimposed.
Iota, epsilon and sigma were first three letters of `Jesus' in Greek.
`In hoc signo' was Latin for `in this sign you will conquer'.
Today it means `Jesus Hominum Salvator' (Jesus Saviour of Men)

Another puts the origin as an abbreviation of the Latin phrase Jesus Hojminum Salvator (Jesus, Savior of Men).
